The workplace is a social milieu. Like it or not, even those of us who telecommute must at least occasionally interact with superiors, subordinates, and peers. And if we’re not good at that, it is almost certain to hold us back in terms of earnings and advancement.

Unfortunately, social skills are not taught in school. We do not learn social skills the same way we learn math, science, and grammar. Social skills are less about being taught, and more about learning through trial and error. And some of us are still learning, especially if we did not have positive role models growing up. The good news is that social skills, especially social skills needed to navigate and succeed in the workplace, can be learned as an adult.
